It was in early 1992 that a local priest, Fr Vic George, came up with the idea of setting up
a local branch of the Scout Group. He approached Mr. Ray Spiteri Binett with his idea and invited him to
set up The Attard Scout Group. With the help of ex-leaders of the Pembroke and Gzira group, Mr. Spiteri Binett
soon gathered enough leaders and members to form the Attard Group. Authority from the National Scout Association
was granted and the group was officially launched on the 14th February 1992.
The
Group had an immediate
impact on the local children, who enrolled as scouts and cubs in considerable numbers. Mr. Spiteri Binett, the
group's GSL, enrolled a number of |Scout Leaders to take charge of the group. A number of parents formed the
group's first council which was led by Mr. Alfred J Bonello.
Thanks to the assistance of the local
Parish
Chapter, especially the group's chaplain and later Attard's parish priest, the amicable Fr. Dione, the group
started meeting in the local Parish Hall. Within a year of its birth, the group had already achieved a remarkable
status within the Attard community.
In 1994, Mr. Spiteri Binett relinquished his post as GSL and the District Commissioner asked Mr. Joe Filletti,
a seasoned scout leader himself, to take over the group as GSL. Some time later, the
parish hall was closed refurbishment and the group
had to seek a new home. Meetings were temporarily housed in leaders' private residences,
until the local council,
in agreement with the AFM, granted the group the use of the Attard War Rooms in B'Kara Road as their
HQ. The group met in these premises until 2004, when the group took over the lease of the Old Slaughter House in Triq il-Gradilja, from the Government.
The place updated was in a dilapidated state. In true Scouting Spirit, leaders and volunteers of the group
set to work to renovate the place. And what was a defunct and derelict building, was soon transformed into the
Group's proud
Headquarters.
These were officially opened in May 2005 by Minister Tonio Borg.
Throughout the years, the Group's Council has been continuously active,
organizing fund raising activities for the group and
helping the Scouters in their events. The current Group Council
Chairman is Mr Noel DeBono.
Today the group has over 80 children in its Beaver Colony (which was set up in 2004), Cub Pack, Scout Troop and Venture Unit.
In August of 2006, Mr. Joe Filleti relinquished his role as GSL ,due to his retiring age, and
was
succeeded by Mr. Vince Farrugia,
who previously held the post of Skipper.
The Group's mission is 'to continue providing the Attard community with Leaders and
value citizens through good Scouting Principles'.
